The RETRO TRIPPER is born from a desire for a short, wide, glidey fish alternative—built for confident, controlled surfing in punchy, powerful waves. With a beaked nose, winged pin tail, mellow retro rocker, flat deck, and steep downward rails, combined with a Twin+1 fin set-up, it thrives in good, powerful, hollow, fast, and even solid surf. Yet, it still keeps that cruisey, skatey feel that makes everyday sessions a blast.
Originally developed in early 2021 as a personal board for smaller days during an early-season Salina Cruz strike mission, the first version proved solid—but with room for refinement. A second version followed in April during a trip through the Mentawais. At the same time, inspired by those early boards, we shaped a few more for some of the Lost team riders back home.
Then came the call from STAB for Electric Acid. We shaped two for the Ho siblings—glass-on fins and all. From those prototypes, we gathered valuable feedback. By July ’21, we were headed to El Salvador with Coco Ho and Luke Davis as the test pilots. The waves delivered, and so did the RETRO TRIPPER. It was, without a doubt, money.
Built off the Lost RetroRipper chassis—but shorter, thicker, wider, and with a more forward outline—the RETRO TRIPPER has DNA that’s also reminiscent of the classic #MonkFish round pin, famously ridden by Cory Lopez in his Skeleton Bay section of 5’5″ x 19 1/4″ Redux. A flat deck, foiled rails, and forward volume create an easy-paddling, momentum-generating machine. Underneath, it features a soft rolled vee up front, transitioning to the slightest single concave through the centre, fading into a double-concaved vee through the tail. A curvy tail rocker and winged tail cut down surface area for added control. The result is a forgiving, precise ride that makes the extra foam feel nimble, letting you hit critical sections with speed and confidence.
Whether it’s stashed in the travel bag for a mission, paddled out for punchy local mornings, saved for clean lines at your favourite point break, or just enjoyed for mellow glides in everyday surf, the RETRO TRIPPER delivers. Glassed standard with single-sided opaque laminations and minimal logos, it channels mellow 70’s soul over loud 80’s flash.
