Pyzel Ghost.

The board John John Florence rode to a world title, and still the most-copied high-performance shortboard of the last decade. Jon Pyzel pushed the wide point and the apex of the rocker forward, then pulled the tail in tight, so the Ghost paddles like a bigger board but turns like a smaller one. Best from shoulder-high up. In stock 5'10" to 6'4" with Futures boxes, shipped fast across the UK.

What makes the Ghost different

Most shortboards put the wide point behind centre. The Ghost doesn't. Jon Pyzel moved both the wide point and the apex of the rocker forward of centre, stacking volume under your chest, then pulled the tail in until it reads almost gunny for the length. A single concave runs through to a double through the tail, with low entry rocker up front for paddle speed and plenty of curve out the back for vertical surfing. The result is a board with drive off the front foot and release off the back. You can lean into a turn and follow through without the tail skipping. Round and round-pin tails suit the design, and both are represented in the boards above, alongside the rest of the Pyzel range.

Who it's for, and where it works

The Ghost comes alive from around four foot upwards: reefs, points, and beach breaks with some shape and push. Autumn and winter groundswell in Cornwall, North Devon or Scotland is exactly its territory. It rewards a confident intermediate through to advanced surfer who wants one board for the good days. If most of your sessions are waist- to head-high and gutless, this isn't the shape. Look at the Pyzel Phantom or a twin fin or fish instead.

How to size a Ghost

  • Everyday good waves: your usual shortboard length, a touch wider and thicker.
  • Stepping up for solid surf: two to four inches over, keeping volume similar to your standard board.
  • Serious size: up to eight inches over, or move across to a proper big wave gun.
  • Unsure on litres? Use our board advisor or call the shop. We'd rather talk it through than have you guess.

Ghost, Phantom or Shadow?

The Ghost is the specialist for good waves. The Phantom is the step-down: same rocker, flatter through the middle, built for head-high and under. The Shadow keeps the Ghost rocker but moves the wide point back to centre for a more traditional, all-round feel. For small-wave days, the Gremlin covers the grovel end. Compare the lot against the wider shortboard collection.

Set it up properly

Ghosts here run Futures boxes. A medium-to-large thruster template suits the pulled tail, while a quad set adds speed down the line at points. Browse Futures fins, and finish the kit with a tail pad, leash and a board bag.

Is the Pyzel Ghost good for intermediates?

Yes, if you're surfing decent waves and size it honestly. Add width and thickness rather than chasing pro dims.

Is the Ghost a step-up board?

It's the crossover. Ridden at your normal length it's an everyday good-wave board. Two to four inches over and it becomes a genuine step-up.

What size Ghost should I ride?

Start at your usual shortboard length, then add width and thickness. Stock runs 5'10" to 6'4". Anything outside that we can order or build as a custom.
