Pyzel Gremlin.

The Gremlin is the step-down cousin to the Phantom, with plenty of extra volume packed into a wider, flatter-rockered outline built for quick acceleration and easy speed. Low entry rocker gets you gliding through the weakest sections, while genuine curve left in the tail keeps it snappy rather than sluggish. Higher-level surfers ride it four to six inches under their height and find a full performance board hiding underneath.

How the shape works

The wider outline pairs with a low entry rocker, which is what gives you easy speed and glide through the slowest, flattest sections of a wave. Rather than flatten the whole board out, Pyzel left real curve through the tail rocker, and that is the detail that keeps the Gremlin manoeuvrable instead of stiff. The bottom runs single into double concave with a nice amount of vee off the tail, so despite the width it rolls rail to rail cleanly. The upshot is a board that paddles easily, gets up and goes immediately, and still has a snappy, drivey feel when you push it.

How to size a Gremlin

  • Advanced surfers: four to six inches below your height, where the high-performance side of the design shows up.
  • Intermediates: stick around your own height for more stability and easier wave catching.
  • Add width and volume over your everyday shortboard either way.
  • That is a wide spread. Our board advisor or a quick call will pin down where you sit.

Gremlin, Phantom or White Tiger?

The Phantom is the everyday performance board for head-high and under, and the Gremlin is its step-down cousin for when it drops below that. Compared with the White Tiger, the Gremlin carries more rocker and a squash tail, so it surfs tighter and more vertically while the White Tiger is faster in a straight line. The Astro Pop is the fishier option again, and the Ghost waits at the other end for when the swell finally arrives. Compare the lot in the shortboard collection, or look at a twin fin or fish for a different feel entirely.

The days it earns its keep

Knee to head-high, soft and slow. That covers a large slice of the UK surf calendar, particularly summer beach breaks in Cornwall and North Devon when everything else in the quiver feels like too much board. The Gremlin is the one that gets you excited about paddling out on a two foot day, which is exactly what it was designed to do.

Fins and set-up

Thruster is the standard set-up and suits the tail curve. Going up a template size adds hold if you ride it very short, while a quad configuration adds drive down the line on the weakest days. Browse Futures fins or FCS fins depending on your boxes, then finish with a tail pad, leash and board bag.

Made in the UK

Ocean Magic is the UK licensed manufacturer for Pyzel, so these boards are shaped and glassed in our Newquay factory. If your size is not on the shelf, we can build a custom Gremlin in four to six weeks, and there are often Pyzel boards in the sale worth a look first.

Is the Gremlin good for intermediates?

Yes. Ride it around your height rather than chasing the short dimensions and it is one of the easiest boards in the range to get waves on.

How short should I go on a Gremlin?

It depends on your level. Four to six inches under your height if you surf well, closer to your height if you are still developing. Ask us if you want a specific recommendation.

Gremlin or Phantom?

Phantom for head-high and under with a performance feel. Gremlin when it is smaller than that and you want foam, width and speed.
