John John already had the Red Tiger for performance surfing in small, weak waves and the Ghost for when it turned on properly. What he wanted was the board in between, for surf that is better than average but not the stuff you break out a step-up for. The Power Tiger is a refined Red Tiger rather than a new design from scratch, and the name tells you what changed: everything was adjusted to cope with power. It sits in the middle of Pyzel's Tiger family alongside the rest of the Pyzel range.
The outline is the obvious difference. The nose and tail are pulled in, which adds curve through the template and makes the board noticeably more responsive at speed and in tighter turns. Thinner rails bite into the face rather than skating over it, which is what you want in a barrel or on a steep, powerful wall. The bottom rocker was adjusted to add looseness and improve rail engagement through turns. In stock dimensions the Power Tiger runs around a quarter of an inch narrower and a sixteenth thinner than a Red Tiger of the same length, with a squash tail.
Think of it as a sliding scale of wave quality. The Red Tiger handles slow, average surf up to about head-high. The Power Tiger takes it from there into bigger, more powerful conditions. The Ghost is the specialist once the waves are genuinely good and solid. For a more forgiving everyday option, the Phantom covers head-high and under, and the White Tiger handles the really weak days. Compare across the shortboard collection, or look at a proper big wave gun if you are chasing size.
Three fin boxes as standard, and a thruster is where this board belongs. Given the pulled-in tail and thinner rails, most surfers run a medium to large template for hold through carves in powerful surf. Browse Futures fins, then add a tail pad, leash and board bag.
Ocean Magic is the UK licensed manufacturer for Pyzel, so these boards are shaped and glassed in our Newquay factory. If the size you need is not in stock, we can build a custom Power Tiger in four to six weeks, and it is worth checking the sale first.
It is a step up in sensitivity from the Red Tiger, with thinner rails and less forgiveness. Confident intermediates surfing decent waves will get on with it. If you are still developing, the Red Tiger or Phantom is the easier ride.
Red Tiger for slow, average surf. Power Tiger for when the Red Tiger starts to feel small and skittish in bigger, more powerful waves. Plenty of surfers own both.
