Pyzel Radius Prime.

Pyzel's ultimate high-performance shortboard, re-tuned. The Radius Prime takes the design Jordy Smith picked as his winner in Stab in the Dark and adds a touch more tail rocker for a tighter turning radius, plus a little extra nose width for drive and flow. Continuous medium to high bottom rocker, single concave for lift, and a hip in the outline that keeps it lively. Built for better waves and surfers ready to push their level.

What the Prime changed

The original Radius was already a benchmark high-performance shortboard and a favourite of Pyzel's international team. Rather than start again, Jon Pyzel refreshed it with everything learned from years of the original in the water. He added a small amount of width in the nose, which brings drive and better flow through turns, and a touch more tail rocker, which tightens the turning radius and makes it easier to get up into the lip. The stock dimensions also carry around a litre more foam per size than the original, which quietly makes it a more usable board for the rest of us. See how it fits the wider Pyzel range.

How it rides

Continuous medium to high bottom rocker means the board turns easily and never feels like it is fighting the curve of the wave, while a single concave underneath adds lift and drive so it does not feel sticky despite that rocker. The hip in the outline is the character of the shape: it gives you a pivot point, keeps the tail loose and lets you surf off the back foot without losing the drive you built up on the bottom turn. Fast, loose and rippable is the honest summary. It is at its best on waves with some curve in the face and only gets better as the surf gets more powerful.

How to size a Radius Prime

  • Close to your usual high-performance shortboard length, since the stock dims already carry extra foam.
  • Volume in line with what you normally ride, rather than adding more, as this is a good-wave board.
  • A round tail version works as a slight step-up if you want to push into bigger surf.
  • Unsure which end of the range to sit at? Our board advisor or a call to the shop will sort it.

Radius Prime, Ghost or Phantom?

The Ghost pushes the wide point forward and pulls the tail in, so it suits powerful, hollow waves and surfers who like to lean into long turns. The Radius Prime is the more conventional high-performance outline, looser off the tail and more suited to waves with curve you want to attack. The Phantom is the easier daily driver for head-high and under, and the Power Tiger covers the same middle ground with more forgiveness. Compare the lot in the shortboard collection, or look at a big wave gun if you are going up in size.

Fins and set-up

Thruster is the intended set-up and where the design makes most sense. A medium to large template gives you hold through carves and suits the extra tail rocker, while dropping down a size loosens the tail further if you want it skatier. Browse Futures fins or FCS fins depending on your boxes, then add a tail pad, leash and board bag.

Made in the UK

Ocean Magic is the UK licensed manufacturer for Pyzel, so the Radius Primes on this page are shaped and glassed in our Newquay factory rather than freighted in. If your size is not on the shelf, we can build a custom Radius Prime in four to six weeks, and it is worth a look at the sale first.

Is the Radius Prime suitable for intermediates?

It is a genuine performance board, so it rewards surfers who are already turning off the rail. Pyzel positions it as the board for anyone ready to level up, and the extra foam in the Prime makes that step less painful than the original.

What waves is the Radius Prime for?

Better than average and upwards. It comes alive when the face has some shape and push, which for most UK surfers means autumn and winter swells rather than summer beach breaks.

Radius Prime or Ghost?

Ghost for powerful, hollow waves and long drawn-out turns. Radius Prime for a looser, more traditional high-performance feel on waves with curve.
